There’s only about a week and a half left in my summer vacation. I haven’t accomplished nearly as much as I had hoped to. To rectify that, I’ve started on the Nuzlocke Challenge for Pokemon FireRed. For those who don’t know what the Nuzlocke Challenge is, here are the official rules (plus a house rule for our run):
- You can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in an area. If it faints, runs away, or is something stupid like Zubat, we have to wait until the next area before we can catch something else.
- HOUSE RULE: We’ve added the Dupe Clause, meaning that if we already own the first Pokemon we run into in an area, we can try for the next one. However, if we don’t encounter something new after three tries, we can’t get anything in that area.
- If a Pokemon faints, it is treated as dead, and must be released after the battle ends.
And that’s it! I’m currently in Fuchsia City. There have been some fairly dramatic battles and some tough spots, but all in all we’ve been playing it safe by going for type advantages and leveling up to roughly the same level as other trainers in the area. Since our starter was Bulbasaur, the early gyms were a breeze. Surprisingly, the throwaway battles are the ones that seem to be the closest calls: the Youngster with the level 14 Spearow in the area immediately after the Pewter Gym nearly wiped out half my team.
